Mesquite tree hardwood. Mesquite is a common name for several plants in the genus prosopis which contains over 40 species of small leguminous trees. Mesquite trees are short twisted sonoran desert plants and the resulting lumber reflects the intense hard life they endure. Mesquite from nahuatl mizquitl is a plant found in mexico and upwards through the southern us. Freshly cut mesquite is medium tan and ages to a reddish sun baked sandstone color.
Our mesquite lumber is harvested from rescued or re claimed mesquite trees on ranches and farms throughout south texas. The mesquite tree is one of the last trees to leaf out in the spring making it less likely that its tender new buds will be damaged by an unexpected late freeze. It is a deciduous tree reaching heights of 20 30 ft.
While the honey mesquite tree continues to annoy ranchers and some other people it does seem to have a lot of good uses and benefits. They are native to the southwestern united states and mexico except the creeping mesquite which is native to argentina but invasive in southern california the mesquite originates in the tamaulipan mezquital ecoregion in the deserts and xeric shrublands biome. Some species are also found in central and northern south america. The wood comes from the mesquite tree which grows primarily in the southwestern united states and parts of northern mexico.
Depending on the particular species and environmental conditions it can exhibit more shrub like tendencies than a tree.
