Refinish A Shop Floor
If a drop of water soaks in immediately the wood fibers may already be exposed and the floor needs refinishing.
Refinish a shop floor. Pick at least two test areas on the floor. Find protruding nails by sliding the blade of a putty knife across the floor. Move the furniture and pull up any carpeting or rugs in the room. Remove debris on the floor with a vacuum cleaner or mop.
Clean each area with a wood floor cleaner and roughen a 6 x 6 in. In order for the stain to penetrate the wood evenly use a technique called water popping mix a solution of one part denatured alcohol to two parts water. If you choose to refinish keep these things in mind. Check for squeaks and secure loose floorboards with finishing nails.
Since the sanding process can remove a lot of surface your floor needs to be at least 3 4 thick. Roughen up two test areas and then coat them with urethane to begin refinishing hardwood floors. Area with sanding screen. Hammer down protruding nails.
Use a shop vacuum with a brush head to clean the floor thoroughly and then follow with a sticky tack cloth to remove any remaining particles image 1. If the floor is warped deeply stained squeaky or otherwise damaged you ll need to make repairs first then refinish. One in a high traffic zone the other along a wall or in a closet.
